What That Pesky Itch Means

Have one or both (hahaaa I almost typed “more” instead of “both” there) of your palms been itchy? I’m talking for no apparent reason. Nothing medical, no allergies or rashes… just plain ol’itchy?

Well, there are a few theories on that… some older ones just cancel each other out… like if your right hand itches it could be a sign of money coming in… or money to be paid out. Why even say that if it cancels out? I would just say it has nothing to do with money. lol There.  However, an itch on the right hand is generally seen as a bad omen. One old wives’ tale warns that it is a sign of poverty, while another views it as the harbinger of a handshake from a fool.

Wait! There is more on the right palm! According to popular belief, an itch in the right palm indicates the possibility of a financial windfall, and scratching it would result in you losing your ‘lucky money’. Hence, in order to get the ‘green bucks’, bear the irritation and make sure that you do not scratch your right palm.

According to Italian superstition, an itch on the left hand is a sign of coming into money. An old wives’ tale claims that an itch on the left hand indicates a forthcoming letter, and yet another superstitious belief holds that if the left palm itches, money is about to leave an individual’s hands. See? The money thing cancels out again.

You guessed it… there is more on the left palm! Superstition about an itchy left palm is usually opposite to that surrounding an itchy right palm. According to this superstition, you are likely to spend or lose some money if your left palm itches. This means that you will have an unexpected financial strain.

So, what does it mean if BOTH palms itch? “If both your palms itch, You are bound to get rich” Both your palms itching together might point towards a lucky and a fruitful day ahead. For palms itching together, put them into your pockets and then scratch them. This will get the money flowing into your pockets. The Chinese however, consider the itching of palms as a bad omen, and try to relieve the itch soon as possible. Remember the wood?

The more recent superstitions seem to agree that right palm itching means some sort of windfall or money coming it and the left hand itching means some sort of financial troubles. The rubbing of the palms on wood to soothe them also seems to be a common theme.

When your palms itch, take a moment to notice and then go rub them on something made of wood. You decide what superstition you choose to believe.
